Privacy Policy
Last updated September 22, 2026
This policy explains what information Tarang ("we", "us") collects, how we use it, and who we share it with.
Information We Collect
- Account information. Your handle, display name, and the email address Google or Apple shares with us when you sign in.
- Age range. Which of three ranges you are in: 13 to 15, 16 to 17, or 18 and over. It is asked at signup and cannot be skipped, and it starts at 13 because Tarang is for people 13 and over. We store the range rather than a date of birth, and we do not verify it.
- Content. Posts, photos, videos, Waves, Talks, and follows you create or send.
- City and language. The city you gave at signup shapes your feed and who Discover suggests, and is never shown to anyone. The city on your profile is separate, and is public. Your languages shape your feed and are not public.
- Usage and interaction data. What you view, Wave, Talk on, and follow, which powers the feed's ranking.
- Device and diagnostic data. Device type, app version, and crash and error reports, which can include a masked recording of the screens.
- Feedback. What you send us from the app, with a screenshot if you attach one.
How We Use It
- To operate the app and personalize your feed.
- To help you find, and be found by, relevant people and content.
- To detect and prevent abuse, spam, and policy violations.
- To diagnose and fix technical problems.
- To communicate with you about your account.
How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information.
- Service providers. Companies that run parts of the app for us: sign-in (Google, Apple), hosting and storage (Supabase, Vercel, Upstash), error reporting (Sentry) and notifications (Firebase). Each may use your data only to provide services to us.
- Other users. Your public profile, posts, and public interactions are visible to other users, as with any social app.
- Legal reasons. If required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of Tarang, our users, or the public.
Data Retention & Deletion
- We keep your account information for as long as your account is active.
- Interaction data that powers the feed is kept for up to 13 months.
- You can download a copy of your data at any time from Settings.
- You can delete your account from Settings, inside the app. Your profile, posts, and Talks stop being visible to anyone immediately. India's IT Rules require us to keep your account information for 180 days after you delete it, so everything is kept for 180 days and then permanently erased at our next monthly clean-up. During those 180 days you can ask us to restore your account by writing to contact@funstuff.studio.
- Photos and videos you delete, stories once they expire, and pictures you replace are kept for 180 days and then permanently erased at our next monthly clean-up.
- People you follow, and people who follow you, are removed straight away and are not restored if you come back.
- Some interaction data may be retained in de-identified form to preserve the accuracy of our recommendation system for other users.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to withdraw consent. If you are in India, you have the right under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 to a summary of the personal data we process about you and to grievance redressal. To exercise any of these rights, contact contact@funstuff.studio.
Children's Privacy
Tarang is not designed for children, and our Terms of Use ask you to be at least 13. The age question at signup starts at 13 and says so, but nothing verifies the answer, so someone younger who picks a range they are not in still gets an ordinary account with everything this policy describes: handle, display name, the email address Google or Apple shares with us, city, languages, and a record of what you view and interact with.
We do not ask a parent or guardian to consent, and we cannot verify what anyone tells us. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 counts everyone under 18 as a child and requires verifiable parental consent before a child's data is processed. We have not built that, so we are collecting personal data from people who have told us they are under 18 without it.
What we do is limit what that data is used for. If you tell us you are under 18:
- We do not profile you. We still record what you view and interact with, as we do for everyone, but we do not build a profile of you from it, and your feed is not ranked on one.
- You are not shown posts marked mature. Not in the feed, not in search, not on a profile, and not through a shared link. We also do not send you a notification about one.
- You cannot lift either limit. The setting that lets an adult see mature posts is never offered to you, and is ignored if it reaches us anyway.
The same limits apply to anyone who has not answered the question yet. If you are a parent or guardian and want an account closed, or want to know what we hold about your child, write to contact@funstuff.studio.
